smhi-opendata, wind speed, why is there no tenths decimal place ?

Dear SMHI team,

Q1:
All (hourly average) wind speed records look like xx.0.
Why are there no values after the decimal point (except 0)?
The instrument should read to the tenth of a m/s ... or do they?

Q2:
What are the wind speed and direction instrument models (if they differ: specifically at Kalmar Airport)?

Q3:
What is the measurement height above ground, is it 10 m?

Q4:
Where exactly is the MET mast / weather station located at Kalmar Aiport? The coordinates provided in the smhi-opendata file do not seem to match up visually (in Google Earth).

Thank you very much!

  • Hello Frank,

Thank you for your questions. I apologize for the delayed response.

The station at Kalmars airport is owned by Kalmar Öland Airport AB (the city of Kalmar). Here is information on how you can contact them http://kalmarolandairport.se/kontakta-oss/

Q1. This information is sent to us through synoptelegram and we only get the data without the decimals. We dont have access to the raw data from the station.

Q2. According to the last report from the inspection they use Vaisalas instruments for both the speed and direction of the wind. We have no information about the model.

Q3. The measurement height is 10m above ground.

Q4. The coordinates for a station will give you a general information of the place where temperature and sometimes precipitation is measured.
At an airport there can be different information since the measurements of wind often takes place in connection to the landing strips. I Kalmar there is a wind measurement for each landing strips.

    Regards,
