Västtrafik historic GTFS to present day

Good morning,

I require Västtrafik service data from January 1st 2022 till October 31st 2022 (static/sheduled data as well as real-time historic, if possible). Which file should I download?

I have a .csv dataset of journeys, with each journey 'row' containing origin and destination coordinates and the date/time it took place. I need to batch query these journeys on Open Trip Planner to understand what the public transport options were at the specific date and time a given journey took place.. but I am not sure which GTFS file I should download for my script. Would I need to split my queries by month and use a historic GTFS file for each respective month? At the moment, the Västtrafik GTFS Sverige 2 and the KoDa API require me to specify a date for a GTFS file to be downloaded... but does that date cover other service days, or just THAT specific day?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi David,

The KoDa API contains datasets which have been captured each day. This way you can see how the schedules evolved during time, although there are only 2 major dates on which the schedules change completely. The GTFS data is always the complete dataset published on that day, which often includes traffic for multiple months.

Historical realtime data is not available for Västtrafik, since Västtrafikens realtime data is not available on Trafiklab.

  • Hi Bert,

Thanks for your reply! May I kindly ask therefore for your recommendation on which data file I ought to use to get the public transport schedules betwen 2022-01-01 and 2022-10-31?

Where could I find information on which months are included in a given GTFS file? and which are the two major dates on which schedules change completely?

    Thanking you in advance,
    David

  • Hi David,

The timetable changes around the middle of june and the middle of december.
In your case, you could download the files for each monday, then use those files for that week. By doing so, you should achieve a good balance between precision (the data will include all scheduled deviations up to a week before the actual trip) against work (you don't have to download and load every GTFS file). Since the GTFS files will overlap, you will need to configure OTP to use the correct file for each week (if this is possible) or only load one file at a time in OTP.

If the accuracy isn't crucial, you could use one file from January 1st for all journeys between January and June, and 1 file from June 1st for all trips after June 1st. This would save you the work of switching files all the time.

    Regards,
    Bert
