Snow Included in the Precipitationn Data??

Hej
First of all : sorry I dont speak fluently swedish so I may have miss some informations
I am a PostDoc researcher at the SLU
My question is simple:

when I download the precipitation data with "Nederbördsmängd dygnsvärde",
is the snow fall converted in snow water equivalent and included in this data?

Or should have download snow data separetlt and do the conversion myself?

Thanks a lot for your help

  • Hi Youen,

When precipitation falls as snow or hail, it is first melted before it can be measured. So yes, the snow water equivalent is included in "Nederbördsmängd, dygnsvärde".

Another parameter is "Snödjup, dygnsvärde", which is the snowdepth (in meters) as measured in the morning at 06 UTC.
  • Hi all. I try to get information for the town of Säter, our son  lives but am unable to bring it up. What am I doing wrong?
  • Hi Andy!

I don´t think that your doing something wrong, the reason that you don´t find any information is because there is no measurement station in Säter.
Follow the guide below to find nearby data.

All data can be downloaded through our Open Data. Here is a direct link to the page:  http://opendata-download-metobs.smhi.se/explore/

    • First select the parameter to the upper left: “Temperature” (Lufttemperatur), “Precipitation” (Nederbörd), “Gusts” (Byvind), etc.
    • Select “Only now active” (“Endast nu aktiva”) , zoom in on the map and click the green dot, which is located in the area you are interested in. (Green dot = All stations that have measured the choosen parameter)
    • Then select "Historically reviewed" (Historiska granskade), "The latest 4 months" (Senaste 4 mån) or “Latest day” ("Senaste dygnet") and the data will be opened in an Excel-document.

If you get squares (####) instead of dates when you open the file in Excel, then you need to expand the columns.

Note that only ONE parameter can be downloaded each time. So you have to repeat to get the other parameters.

    Have a great day!

  • Thanks Karin.
  • Hi again Karin.
I live in Calgary Canada and the wind speed is measured in km/hr. To me it tells me what the w/s is in a more straight forward way. Different countries have different ways I suppose. Today we are under a freezing rain/ heavy snowfall warning advisory. This system is arriving as we speak from the south-west. What we are worrying about this spring is a low pressure system moving in from the s/e creating the same scenario as in 2013 when all of Calgary-downtown flooded. An upslope condition resulted in a heavy rain that melted the eastern slopes  of the Rocky Mountain snow pack which created this disaster. An other weather phenomena is our "Chinook" winds out of the Pacific Ocean creating fast temperature increases which is a wonderful brake from the sometimes arctic deep freeze. Thanks again for a great webpage. Spring is on its way.
    Andy
