Alginate casting

Hello 😀 I was wondering if it was possible to make a mould with alginate casting of a sculpture made from plaster? So essentially make a mould to make a copy of a plaster sculpture? i am wondering because plaster is not oil based and it is dry, so will it not work? does it work if you cote the plaster sculpture in oil first? Should i soak the plastet figure first in water or seal it with something? I don't want to destroy the original plaster sculpture.
I have never doen anything like this before😅 thanks!

  • Hi Silje.
Alginat isn't suitable for making mold of a plaster sculpture av it is hard to remove from the cast without destroying it. A mold can be made by adding a lot of layers of formgummi, when they are dry it creates a rubber mold that can be peeled of the sculpture. The naturlatex/formgummi (108435 ) may stain the white color of your original sculpture. To avoid this you could coat it with a transparent coating like oceanlack (244350), shiny, semi shiny or mat. BUT we can not guarantee the result and if you want to test this we recommend you to test on a small surface that is hidden, like at the bottom or somewhere that isn't visible.
    Good luck,
