You are ruining what used to be a great game

I am sorry to give a negative title, but it's true: the game is no longer worth playing. I have long enjoyed it. But first you get rid of the clock on the main game -- why? (okay, it's still there on the retro version -- which is good.) But now on retro at least one in three 'random' picks are photos where you can't MOVE. The whole fun is to move around and search for clues. Now you can't do that. Perhaps you did this to avoid all those dusty roads in Queensland, but this alternative is much, much worse than the most boring highway in Brazil. Please drop the photos. MapCrunch can be turned into GeoGuessr with the addition of the map and a clock, but I would rather play your game.

  • Hi Barry.

I'm sorry you feel that way. The reason why they occur more often is simply because the amount of locations where you can't move increases in Google's data as well, i.e. more people are uploading their own photos and panoramas to Google. This is also why they keep increasing in the retro version automatically. This is not intentional on our behalf.

Please bear with us, we're working hard on removing all locations with no walking options.

Regarding the timed games, those are in the new version as well.
    Please follow the steps below:
    1) On geoguessr.com, click on the "More maps" in the bottom of the screen.
    2) Find a map you prefer. World is the traditional GeoGuessr game, the others are theme games on countries, cities etc.
    3) Click on the gear icon right next to the PLAY button and you can set a time limit.

Hope this helps, and thank you for playing the game.

  • Erland -- my apologies.... it didn't occur to me at all that the photos were the result of people uploading. So I guess your core problem is with Google Maps.

Thanks also for the instructions on the timing.

    Thanks for your speedy reply.

    best

  • No problem, happy to help. We get a lot of feedback on the photos without walking options and we certainly share your opinion that they have to go.

  • Would it help you if you got links to games where photospheres happened?

  • Hi Simpelicity.

I'm sorry, but no. There's simple too many of them in the Google Streetview data.

However, A couple of weeks ago, we removed the photospheres from the maps "world" (https://www.geoguessr.com/world) and UK (https://www.geoguessr.com/uk). This means that all locations in those maps should be "walkable". There are other posts in this forum about this and we have not received any negative feedback since. We'll continue adding this feature into the other maps as we go.

    Best,

    Erland
  • Yet I still got someone's contribution just now. I could walk to a couple places.
Well, it does remove a lot of them I suppose, even if we'll still get to visit the occasionnal japanese dental clinic.

  • Erland, I don't know where you are based, but I want to engage some expert help in building a timed map game using Google Earth instead of StreetView. barrykstevens@gmail.com

  • Hi Barry.

We're hailing from Stockholm, Sweden. Please contact daniel@geoguessr.com to initiate such a discussion.
