Please consider taking less points away from a defeat. I'm not sure why it should be so easy to lose them and so difficult to gain them. A victory requires more effort and talent than a defeat, so it makes sense to me that it should be rewarded more than a defeat is punished. Perhaps if you made both gaining and losing points happen in equally small increments then it would average out (accounting for both really good luck or really bad luck that can happen from time to time) to give a better picture of the player's skill level.
