Observations on the 0 points bug

So, there's been a bug around for a long time now, where on timed games you don't get points past the first round. After some testing, it looks to me like you don't get points once the time you put in the timer runs out. ie, I started a game with a 2 minute timer, placed guesses as fast as I could, and got points in all of them. However, I believe it would have started giving 0 points once 2 minutes are past. It's like it applies the timer you set to the entire game.
Hope this helps fix it 😀

  • I just checked this with a few 10 second games, and this seems to hold up. In this game for example: https://geoguessr.com/results/4F9wEZHxSXJVtEX4

(I would include teh challenge link, but I experience another bug where I can't select and copy the challenge link)

I hope this 0 points bug is fixed soon, it makes the game unplayable.

  • Hi guys.

Thanks for all the feedback regarding this. We've pushed out a fix addressing this problem now. Please let us know if you encounter this problem again.

  • It worked on the one game, thanks! It'll get more extensive testing once I record some more games 😀
So, do I get some bragging rights? :P

  • Hi, thanks. I haven't heard anything more about this problem, so Yes(!), you most certainly do.

  • Hi, thank you for the work on it! I just played and it seems to be fixed now. Yay!
Since timed challenges are my favourites I'll surely have an eye on it. Now off to finally play again.

  • Unfortunately I have to correct myself. It worked on the two tries I had before writing that comment but now I it's happening the same as before

I had a couple of more games and it's still completely random. Sometime I finish a round with "make guess" and it works, sometimes I let the timer run down and it works. Sometimes both produce 0 points.

Here are two screenshots from one game. The first one is from the 3rd round, the second from the fourth. In both of them, I did absolutely the same thing. One produced the 0 points bug the other worked fine.

  • That's not the same bug though. That existed before it started giving 0 points every round after the first. The bug mentionned here did get fixed. Your problem comes from something else.

  • Oh I see. I only skimmed through the first post because I already saw the answer that it should be fixed. And since there are several topics on this board about "0 points here, 0 points there" by now I assumed this was only the most current one.
So there are (or were if this one is fixed now) even multiple "0 points in timed challenges" bugs now? Yippie. I hope they are at least related and it means the team is on the right track.

  • Hi Tanja. We're working on this one.

  • Figured I'd chime in here with another data point. Here's a link to the challenge:

You can see on the last location that I guessed pretty close but got zero points. The timer was at about 5 seconds when I guessed. Game was played Nov 12 a bit before noon EST.

  • Haha, again, not the same 0 point bug, but still applies I suppose.

As far as chiming in goes, Chapman ('nother Youtuber that does some Geoguessr) was mentionning he's been noticing that if you click the make guess button in the last few seconds, it'll often be 0. He was theorizing that it was because the timer was calculated server-side, meaning the timer displayed in your browser would always be a few seconds lower than it looked. And so you'd click your guess but the timer had already run out, server-side, so it wouldn't count.

  • well, fwiw, I just played 2 more games guessing within the last 4 seconds every time and always got points.

  • Hi Simpelicity and nicepants42

The time is actually calculated server side so this theory might have some bearing if you're on a slow connection. We'll look into it.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
    Kind regards

  • If I may;

Most of the time GeoG gives 0 points when the "make guess" button isn't pressed. When the timer runs out. My initial impression wasn't that the server wasn't recognizing that a guess was made in time, it's that the server wasn't seeing the "make guess" clicked in time.

In any case, I'd suggest to look into fixing the issue with letting the timer run out. I think that's the actual root of the problem. Client-server optimization, while nice, shouldn't be that big a deal. At least I don't think so.

  • Hi Simpelicity

That sounds like a plausible cause of this problem. We'll look into it!

    Kind regards
