"Invalid User Map" Error When Trying to Save a Map

So today I've been editing a map that's yet unpublished and made quite heavy changes to it that took several hours. At the end, I wanted to save it, but I got the "Ouch! Invalid user map." error. Note that my Pro account didn't expire and that I can edit maps, which was confirmed when I tried to edit my other map. The only things that come to my mind that could've caused the problem is that the browser session in which I was editing lasted really long and that I might have timed out (although I'm still logged in when I go to GeoGuessr website in another tab), or that me playing the map via Challenge while I was editing or while having the same session of the Edit window opened before and after playing it caused the error. (I don't remember clicking Edit on the map in another tab, and I don't think I would have, so that probably isn't the cause.) I still have the map with the changes opened, but I still cannot save it, and I fear closing it or I'll lose all my changes without any chance of somehow overcoming the problem. I don't know if the map itself is saveable though, if I try open it in another window and try to save it. I don't know whether it's the map issue, because it has really many regions and locations, or if it's something else that I've already mentioned, or the server, 'cos the map is huge. I hope this problem can be somehow solved, though I have little hope it will be, or I will lose all the progress I made on editing it today in the afternoon.

Update: I tried playing the Challenge while editing on my other map, and I can still save it. I also tried opening another Edit window while editing the map, and that didn't cause the error either. So it probably isn't those two cases. The most probable is either map/map size(-server) related or because I left my computer with the Edit window opened for some time today and then continued editing it later so somehow it timed out. I also tried checking the "Publish" and "Highlight on Profile Page" check-boxes to see if that would solve the problem, and it didn't.

  • Hi Aleksandar,

Sorry to hear that.. If you still have the window open could you open the console and see if the console says anything more? In chrome you right click on the page and choose inspect then click the console tab.

Around what time did you try to save?

    best,
    Mikael
  • Could you click the network tab and try to save the map again, then you can check the request payload, there you should find all data you're trying to save, if you could copy that I could try to recreate it.

  • I tried to save like an hour before I created the post. I have Firefox, here are the Console and Network pages:

  • Here's another Network when I tried to save, that one had data from before too:

  • I don't know how to find Request Payload in Firefox. I only found something called Request headers:

    Aleksandar
  • Awesome, could you copy the POST data and save it in a text file and send to me

    Mikael
  • I sent it.
    Aleksandar
  • thanks, now we have your data so it wasn't a waste at least. I'll look into what the issue is. A first guess considering how much data it is you might have hit some limit on how much data can be sent/parsed/stored but I will look.

  • Yes, there was a problem where if you cross the time zone line in the Pacific your regions would show 0 locations so I had to move some of the dots and to re-do some regions which created a lot of wasted dots, and there isn't an option to delete vertices, as far as I know, without deleting whole regions. Then, because of the nature of the map (Remote Locations) I had to exclude a lot of areas in the polygons which created many dots too. The number of vertices, I can't even calculate it and regions too, and, of course, the total number of locations in the polygons is huge too, 250k+ in the last update. In the meantime I found a kind of a half-solution, to look at this window and then to replicate the regions I added since the last save in another and to see if it will work.

  • Ok I'm digging but polygons with 0 locations might be a problem..

    Mikael
  • I have loads of those, because I made a lot of regions where they show some little parts of street view or photospheres but have 0 (or less than 5) locations detected when I create them. I thought that that would still maybe come up when you play the map, but I guess that isn't the case, so I guess I should delete them and see if that fixes anything.

  • So, apparently I had a huge region covering basically the whole southern part of the globe with 0 locations because at one point the vertices went over each other and that created the problem. I fixed that place, and now I can save the map! Oh my god, thanks so much for help! If you haven't said that I wouldn't have checked this and found this out.
    Aleksandar
  • Great to hear that, glad you fixed it. We're working on future proofing it to validate and allow empty polygons.

    Impressive map!

  • Thank you. I've also found out that there is a place in Mexico, near San Juan Quiahije, a "See inside" street view made from 2 photospheres by Google, if you put a region up only for it, it won't let you save the map with this same error. The same doesn't happen if it's a part of a bigger region with more locations, also I tried putting an empty region near it and didn't get an error either, and also tried putting that region with only it in it in my other map and I got the same error. It seems that place is bugged somehow, I don't know whether this happens with other "See inside" street views too. It also detects 0 locations when you put it. Both of these problems created the error for me.

  • I had the exact same problem. Turns out that polygons with 0 locations were the problem. Could you please fix this? It's extremely annoying.
