Fix the compass

I have been unable to figure out which end of the compass is north and which is south. It needs a marker. I find N/S orientation very useful in figuring out my location.

  • Hi Bob,

Thanks for playing and providing us with feedback! We've had quite a few suggestions regarding the compass and adjusted it a couple of times. We'll definitely consider adding some kind of marker or N/S orientation. Thanks again for helping us improve the game!

  • Answer the bloody question - is red north or south?

  • Hi Julia (and Bob),

Sorry about that, red is north (same as google maps). Hope that helps!
    Thanks for playing.

    regards,

  • I don’t remember if it’s different on the desktop version, but on the iPhone app, red is NOT north.  Instead of aiming due north at all times, the red arrow turns to point in the direction you’re facing (for example, if the red arrow is pointing to the right, you are facing east, whereas on a real compass you would be facing west).  I do like how it works in the app, but it took me a while to figure out why my compass readings were so off at first.

  • KC’s comment is accurate for the iPad / iPhone app still. I cannot use the compass there.

When I face north, the red compass dial points north. OK.
When I turn east, the red compass dial points east. This is the opposite of what a compass does. When I turn east (clockwise), the needle will keep pointing to the north (counterclockwise) and end up in the west.

I understand that it is easy to have an arrow pointing at the direction you’re facing, but if you make it look like a compass, then make it function as one. It keeps confusing me greatly.

To make it intelligible, replace the compass needle with an arrow or a view cone.

  • Glad to see this thread has survived for so long, but sad to see it has had too.  This is not a difficult fix I would think.  Label the compass.

Google has decided last year to remove the compass from Maps, so it makes it even more difficult. I'm pretty good with a map, I can do resection, intersections, dead reckoning, inclination/declination for magnetic deviation, etc. It should be as easy as clicking on a road, following the compass and knowing which direction you are going, Due to the incorrect way your compass responds, it throws off dead reckoning.

If I'm traveling north on a road, and there is a road to my right, and I turn right, I am now heading east, pretty simple, if i turn around I am now looking west, but your arrow doesn't work that way.

  • Have you changed your compass on ipad game? If the red dial is pointing East and a road sign is saying 5 miles to a town say Hereford then surely I am west of Hereford ... but the location comes up east of the town?

  • The compass is completely gone for me..

  • It works for me when I try in Chrome (95.0.4). Which Browser and version is it gone from? Will see if I can replicate. And is it the same in other browsers?

We are actually working on a new and improved compass. So it will be much better soon 😀

  • I am on Chrome 95.0.4638.54.

Great to hear for the improved compass! thanks

  • Strange, same version as me.

Do you have any extensions or plugins active and if so does it work without them?

Does it miss in all modes you play? Can you send a screenshot just how it looks at the left side of the guessing map.

    Thanks!
    Filip
