Compass is wrong

Let's say I am looking north on the map, and I know that I am looking north without needing the compass. North will be shown with a red arrow on the compass. If I turn the screen left to look west, the compass will show east. This means that for everything except for due-north and due-south, the compass is on the wrong side.

  • Justin,

Do you have a link to the game where this was the case? To my knowledge, the compass has never erred in any of my games.

  • Hi Justin

Thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure that I understand you correctly, could you please elaborate a bit more?

    Kind regards

  • I found this is actually a problem with my entire map system on chrome, not just on geoguessr.

What is happening is that the compass seems to be pointing in the wrong direction. If I look north, the red part of the compass is pointing up on the screen. When I turn the screen to the left, to look west, the compass shows that I am looking east. It does the opposite for looking east from north.

I don't know why this is doing this.

  • Hi Justin

Thanks for the explanation, this seems like a very odd problem indeed! Is it the same on other browsers as well?

    Kind regards
    Anton

  • Maybe it*s just a missunderstanding ?
If i look north, the red of the compass shows upwards on the screen.
Now i turn left, to look to the east, and the red needle turns to the right, because when i look east, north is on my right side.
It acts just like a magnetic compass would work, the red needle always shows to north.

  • That might be an idea Dieter. Can you confirm or deny this Justin before we look into this further?

    Kind regards,

    Anton
  • Yes I can confirm that. Looks like I was confused by it showing north, not showing what direction I am actually facing.

  • Hi Justin

Great to hear that it worked itself out!

    Kind regards,

  • Were you using the app?  I had the same problem, until I realized it’s not behaving like a compass (where the red arrow always points due north), it’s just pointing the red arrow to the cardinal direction you’re facing.  Doesn’t make a difference when it’s north/south, but east/west readings are the opposite of what they should be.  I don’t think it’s a bad way of showing direction, but when it’s designed to look like a compass, it should act like one or it gets confusing!
