Clicking in the distance = slow moving now

Normally, you click near to you, you move that bit, you click far away, you move the that bit, so you could hop 10 feet or a couple or few hundred yards. Now clicking in the distance moves me the small minimal distance.

ruins the game. I see a replated post about the same issue from 4 years ago

  • Hi,

That is due to the some specific panorama or unofficial coverage from Google and nothing we can manually adjust from our end.
    Filip
  • I'm having this issue too, as of about two days ago. It's in regular streetview maps, and it's every map in country streak now, and I never had a problem before now.
    Joe
  • This is not something we can "fix" from our end since it depends on the panorama, the street view coverage and from Google.
    Filip
  • Let's see if it works better today. I noticed it was fine again as I started a new game yesterday but then after a few clicks it was broken again.

Already don't like that I can't play in full screen because the map and cursor start having their own fun.
    Banty
  • Yeah Im checking with Google as well to see if they have done something from their end. 👍
    Filip
  • Google messed up again. It happens on Street View too. It is not related to GeoGuessr.
    Mapper
  • I have the same problem. It's annoying. I hope ti will be reslove soon.

  • I understand it's out of gg hands but if this carries on, my money will be staying in mine.
    Banty
  • Yeah this kind of makes the game unplayable. 🙁

  • Just confirming the problem still exists.

    Win11 + Chrome.

Getting to the point I want to know if it is browser related or broken for all. I cannot enjoy playing if I have to do this 10 clicks per 200 to 300 yds. Some clicks are simply rotating the entire screen so that you end up facing the wrong way. Some wall clicks seem to help, other times, no. Going around corners is hit and miss.

I assume this affects FTP users so as my month is running out with only half a month of acceptable play, I dont see me paying for another until the FTP mode works.

And surely you must have a deal with google where you can reach out and explain there's an issue.

  • I'm having the same issue.  I agree that when it happens (which is fairly often now) the game becomes unplayable.

  • Weirdly, it seems to have gotten better for me.  Or at least, I've learned how to work around it.  The trick being, to watch where the X on the ground moves before I click.  If the X hasn't moved far out I know the click is going to fail to move me where I want it to.

I think the situation is, it's gotten *much* more finicky about where you need to click in order to get a far jump. It's really hard to know just from looking at the picture; you need that X to help guide you as to what's a legit click and what's just going to move you the default small amount forward.

If you're in a context where you do not have a hovering mouse pointer --- for example, if you're on a tablet and navigating by touch -- you're screwed, because you don't have that X to help you.

  • The problem does not appear on every map, but very often. If it's like this the game is unplayable in rural areas because you need so much time to get some hints.

  • We are looking into this to see if we can do anything from our end or if it just Google that needs to push out a fix.

In case you can send over a link to a game where this has happened (along with the round or coordinates for instance) that would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance 🙂
    Filip
  • It has happened in every game I have played, using win11 and chrome for a while since before I reported it after giving a couple days for me trying reboot and stuff possible updates or fixes that may have been caught and addressed without me making any noise.

I have only been playing thru the UK link on the main front page if that helps. And it works sometimes ok initially and then goes bad or is bad from the get go. I dont know if that is location and surroundings related.
    Banty
  • Mee too, I have this problem since I install Window 11 but I am using Edge. I have the problem for almost every game (mostly Canada and US)" Since yesterday, it's a little bit easier but it  s not normal.

    Christian Généreux
  • The problem is on Google Street View, unfortunately GeoGuessr has no control over this. Google did some questionable changes to Street View lately which caused more trouble than anything. I wish they would stop doing bad decisions one day...

For what it's worth, the above link is just a solo country streak game that I started.  The 1st country is Sweden.  On the 2nd country (which is Spain), the "move" cursor can only be placed about 30m ahead of your current position before it disappears, so you can move a maximum of about 30m at a time.  Hope this helps.
    Steve
  • Great, thanks for that Steve!
    Filip
  • Hi Filip! As you seem to be pretty active her, just to let you know that I didn't do the Windows 11 upgrade yet, and I do have the problem since pretty much the date of creation of this topic. I'm using Chrome and Brave, with W10, so seems to really be Google based problem, not browser, not OS
Hope this help, and Merry Xmas to your team
    Jean-Yves Kaczmarek
  • Thanks for providing that!

Yes Im afraid it is an Google issue, which have not yet been resolved. In case you stumble upon any rounds where this issue is present, let me know and I will save it from my end 🙂
    Filip
  • At this point you clearly need to complain directly to Google. You are a customer that pay an expensive service. It is unacceptable that they keep doing bad decisions like this that put your business in risk. Google claims they like GeoGuessr yet all the decisions they made in the past years is killing the game. Remind them they almost killed your business multiples times, especially when they multiplied the API prices by 14. And what did we get from this, a better service like you would expect when paying more? Not at all! No more covered countries, low quality unofficial data without any control to filter them out, broken coverage everywhere and now less navigation capabilities, this is what we get. This can't keep going like this, really.
    Mapper
  • Well, the " no more covered countries" , it's political very probably. If the country doesn't want the Google car on its land, it's not Google fault. However, the technical behaviour encountered now can probably be patched, as it used to be working.
    Jean-Yves Kaczmarek
  • Some countries won't allow but many others would without any problem. But since some people think it's normal to work for Google for free, Google is not doing new countries anymore.
    Mapper
  • Oh no, I thought it was fixed because I hadn't seen it for a long time but I just got hit by it.  This is a solo country streak game and on the 8th one, I was in a very low-res rural area where it was literally impossible to place the X farther away from myself than a few yards.  Could not be done no matter what I did.  (I guessed wrong on the country and ended my streak; thought it was South Africa but it was Australia)

  • This map was a disaster in term of clicking for me

    ( while on a strike on https://www.geoguessr.com/game/guP9XRK3IcycSxws)

For all maps, It's not possible to go far as it used to before. Getting used to this bugged behavior, sometimes,I think it's getting fine, but in fact, I doubt there any map where we could click and get a proper move as we used to before. Even more visible on Mongolia/Perou/Argentina/Brasil countries, where there are huge distances to cover
    Jean-Yves
  • Thanks, have added it to the ticket!
    Filip
  • This problem happened on the daily challenge today, part 4 of 5, was low res and hardly clickable.  How did *that* go unnoticed?
    Ed
  • (Sorry, don't mean to seem impatient, I was just shocked.)
    Ed
  • While none of the map seem to be as responsive as before, here is another map, where the moving action triggers only a 10-20m forward, wherever we click between the center of the road and the horizon
    https://www.google.com/maps?q&layer=c&cbll=15.107917785644531,105.82656860351562

I'll try to find a video+map of an example which was clearly working before, and which doesn't, but it will take a bit of research 😉

    Jean-Yves
  • Great, thanks a lot for that!

Absolutely, you can send that into subscription@geoguessr.com if you want to!
    Filip
  • I did a bit of research and I'm thinking thus is a deliberate change from Google. It is now impossible to jump above 50m. Every time I tried, in many places all over the world, we are always limited to this distance at best. This means you can also have smaller jumps, down to less than 20m. The amount of frames we can jump depends of the distance between them, usually it's around 4-5 frames but it can go higher if the frames are very close to each other (when the car drove slowly like in town) or lower when they are less dense (usually high speed roads). Why did Google think this was a good idea, nobody knows, but this shows again how good Google is to kill things... They need to revert this change otherwise the game is dead.

    Mapper
  • Oui, le jeu perd maintenant beaucoup de son intérêt pour qui aime découvrir le monde en se déplaçant. Dommage...
    Dino
  • Is it possible the real issue (I could be wrong) is the distance clicking only ? ie today I could click at certain rates to a certain distance and achieve that jump but as soon as I went above that, it did a minimum distance response... in that maybe google want people who click to travel, as it were, alot, to slow down ? I mean, is it remotely possible this is a resource issue for google ?

You guys couldn't have timed this 20 minute limit thing any worse.

  • Thanks Raschlav! 👍
