Black Screen of Death

I love GeoGuessr and spend way too much time playing. I've had numerous perfect scores. But way too often, when a game starts, I get a completely black screen. This happened 3 games in a row this evening.

It's very frustrating when I get to round 4 of 5 and can't play. I can put a pin in somewhere and score a few points, but that takes the fun out of it. I get arrows and the icons on the left, but otherwise it's all completely black. I can navigate around. Still black.

I would gladly sign up for the paid version, but not when it doesn't work half of the time. Sigh.

  • I'm having this problem too. I thought it was because I closed my laptop mid game causing it to corrupt or something (It was fine for the first half and then black when I continued it later), then the next round was the same.
    DeltaBravo
  • Exactly my problem, black screens.

    George
  • I now have 100% games with black screen. It's like Google is blocking Geoguessr to load their data. Regular streetview works fine on Google Maps.
    KillerMapper
  • That worries me, KillerMapper, I would only get one or two a game. Does anyone know if the Pro paid version fixes these problems?
    George
  • No, it does not, George. I'm not experiencing 100% black screens, but I don't think having pro or not makes a difference.
    Adam
  • Hi guys. I can confirm that this issues mentioned in here will not go away with a pro subscription. I'm looking into this right now. We've seen this before when Google updated a rather substantial set of locations and GeoGuessr was a bit slow on picking up on the changes. If you guys have any links to games containing broken locations, that will certainly help.

    Best,

    Erland
  • Same problem! Mine go black randomly. This map - for instance - was fine until 10 seconds ago and now it's completely black :/ I honestly don't like losing points because of technical issues 🙁

    Anna
  • Has this been fixed?
    Tammy
  • Hi Tammy

We recently started going through the locations which hopefully should make this problem go away, over time. It might be a while before you notice any major difference but please let us know if you should encounter this problem again!

    Regards,
    Anton
  • This has been happening to me for three days now. It's very frustrating, because I love Geoguessr and it's preventing me from playing! (Maybe it's trying to tell me to get a life?) Anyway, is there anything I can do to fix it, or should I just keep checking to see if it's working again? I usually play the USA map, but sometimes World or Famous Places. All of them are the same right now, just black with the name of the road showing, if that.
    Kathy
  • Black screen same as Kathy.
    Dusty Longwill
  • Nothing has changed in the last week. There is no point in sending a link, because it happens EVERY time, with EVERY map. The problem may be our old computer just can't handle it anymore, but everything else  (GoogleMaps, etc.) is still working. I'm on the verge of giving up on GeoGuessr, just assuming it'll never work again, especially since no one there has answered to give me a hint as to what to do to fix it. I'll miss it, but what can you do?

    Kathy
  • Hi Kathy

What browser are you using? We've previously had reports that some browser extensions (Avira antivirus for examplt) create problems with Google streetview (which GeoGuessr uses). Could you please try to start a new browser window in incognito mode (which disables all browser extensions) and see if there's any difference?

    Regards,
    Anton
  • Hey Anton,
I have the same problems with the black screen in every game. I tried to disable all extensions, but it didn't help a bit. Regular Google Street View works perfectly fine on every browser, even with the extensions enabled.
The black screen only occurs in your game, regardless of the browser, the installed extensions, or the OS. The Game is unplayable at the moment.

p.s. all drivers on my computer and add-ons like Flash Player and Java are up to date

    Philipp
  • I have had the same issue for about a week on the computer in my office, while other computers (e.g. in the lab or at home) are fine. There's a small square in the bottom right corner that you can see the street view but if you try to pan around the visible square keeps jumping back to the corner.
Also on my office PC I can see the street names, and before the black screen of death, the "transition" when moving around was the old-style transition, not the "zoomy" transition from street view.
It's the same in chrome and firefox, and also incognito/private mode makes no difference.
    Alan
  • Thank you, Anton, for responding. Also, thanks Philipp and Alan. Relieved (in a way) that it's not just me. I would have tried to figure out what "incognito mode" meant, but since apparently it doesn't help anyway... 😀   I've tried it in both IE and Chrome; same result in both, except that IE is more likely to freeze entirely, while Chrome allows guesses in the dark. (It's a weird way to play, but I was desperate!) Oh, also, it still seems to work normally on my daughter's boyfriend's computer. Mine is a several-years-old Dell desktop; his is an extremely expensive gaming computer (don't know the years.) Maybe it's our ISP?
    Kathy
  • i have the exact same problem, black screens, but only on firefox.
on chrome / edge it works fine, so the issue for me lays in firefox.

a clean install does not fix it either

  • Hi guys

Sorry about the late reply! This is a difficult issue to troubleshoot since we can't recreate it on our end, and there also be multiple reasons for this problem to appear so please bear with us!
Are you still experiencing these problems? We've had some reports that similar problems have been resolved for users with the latest Chrome update.

    Regards,
    Anton
  • I haven't had the black screen lately. I've had issues with the map vanishing when I zoom in to pinpoint the location, though. Usually the map comes back when I zoom back out to where I can see a whole continent. I spent a couple hours on the back roads of the Italian Alps, only to not be able to zoom in on the GeoGuessr map to make my guess.

It's a great game, even if it's frustrating at times.
    Susan
  • Update:
Appears adblockplus is blocking streetview elements on Firefox.
Turnig abp off for sites using streetview seems to solve this issue
    Motorolavkg
  • I have the same issue, Chrome, all black except a little square at the bottom right corner.

Tried incognito. Works in ie though.
    Andreas
  • I'm having the issue still. Nothing I've tried has worked. Pretty saddening, as I love this game a lot. I've tried on IE, Chrome, and Firefox, and they all show the same thing. A black screen with only a small square on the right side app.
    Kelly
  • Hi guys

    Thanks for the tip Motorola!

A few thing you can try and see if it makes any difference:
    1. Clear the browser cache to make sure that you are using the latest version
    2. Try using a different browser and also try using incognito mode (this disables all extensions e.g.)
    3. Try to disable hardware acceleration in your browser

    Regards,

    Anton
  • Tentei fazer o recomendado porém nada mudou, continuo com uma tela preta e um pouco da imagem no canto da tela
    Ian
  • Hi Ian

Could you please take a screenshot and add here? It would make it easier for us to troubleshoot what might be the problem.

    Regards,
    Anton
  • I can add one late next week. All black except a small visible part in the right corner. Think an image was uploaded showing this. Cache cleared. Only thing working is another browser.
    Andreas Karlsson
  • Okay, here's an update. Disabling hardware acceleration (whatever that really means, heh) did the trick, at least in Chrome. It's tricky to find, however, at least for me (I had to get a young friend who's good with computers to do it.) Back to being able to see the whole picture, yay! Oddly, the street names no longer show up, but I'll take it. Thanks for the suggestions.
    Kathy
  • Hello, i've been having the same problem. For me it mostly happens in places which aren't photographed from the street, when making maps they look like little blue dots.
Tried disabling extensions and hardware accelartion, doesn't do anything. When making maps you can click on the blue dots and the preview will be black but if you click on google logo on bottom left it opens a new tab for google maps and it shows the place but when playing there isn't such a possibility it's just black like in Rene's picture.
    Mikus
  • There are a lot of places like this on this map -https://geoguessr.com/maps/5a1c1f89f3701412ac720a59
    Mikus
  • Disabling hardware acceleration did it for me.
    Andreas Karlsson
  • Okay, you are right. Disabled it and restarted my pc and it works fine now.
    Mikus
  • Great to hear that hardware acceleration seems to solve if for you! Just let us know otherwise.

  • https://geoguessr.com/56f28536148a781b143b0c3b/play this ones just a black screen and nothings helping.

    Caitlin
  • Disabled Hardware Acceleration, didn't help. IE and Firefox both annoy me more than the "Black Screen of Death" does because they crash constantly so I'll stick with Chrome. If it helps, I've only had the problem with the Famous Places maps. Unfortunately, it seems to be nearly every game and usually not the first map. Had a perfect game going and then got the black screen on the last map. Grr.
    GoofyGirl
  • Hi guys

Sorry about that! If you're only having this problem on certain maps, it most likely is a problem with the locations themselves and not something on your device. Sometimes Google removes locations from Street view which in turn can result in a black screen. We have added a few features in the past to minimize this problem but we're working on more. In the meantime please bear with us, or try playing a different map!

    Regards,
    Anton
  • So I tried everything that you said it worked for you but it isn't working for me. It happens on all locations, also I went out for 2 hours and came back it still didnt work.

    You Can Call Bran3
  • It's happened again, literally just now, but I clicked on the 'return to start' button and it wasn't black anymore. I'm back to where I started though.
    Anna
  • Hi guys

Sorry for the late reply! Have you tried to disable hardware acceleration in the browser? Judging by your screenshots this looks like it could be the cause of your problems.

    Regards,
    Anton
  • Yes, I did it and I still have the same problem, with chrome as well as on my Ipad. However, Google Street View works properly and everything else too. I still have 10 «geoguess» in my «current events» that I cannot complete because a black screen. I'm always waiting if you'll find a solution to this.
    Best regards.

  • SERIOUSLY This is an assignment for my class and I have gotten perfect scores and now the last location is black everywhere I GO!! Either know to drop us off in a location that does not have any problems or make a fkn way to change locations if this happens without randomly guessing on the map of the whole WORLD and losing points. Its ridiculous how this is still an issue. like wtf. Oh and I an not running on some program that no one has heard of and everything is up to date and running perfectly so I know it is not a problem on my end.

  • Simple solution to reduce stress is to provide a exit/delete option on any game....  like others I resent losing out to technical issues.  And my backlog of incomplete (black screen) games is a persistent annoyance.

    Lynda
  • For people getting black screens, does it happen all the time or just sometimes? If it is sometimes, do you get a message 'this picture may be subject to copyright' in the bottom right corner of the screen? If yes, then the problem is from Google that removed the picture here and the game tried to load it. Geoguessr has to update the map if it's an official map.
    Mapper
  • It happens every game I play.  And there isn't a message about subject to copyright.  I can move forward and move out of the dead zone.  But it is almost every fifth move forward that the screen is black.

In this link, I am shown three identical locations in the last three (Uruguay) – but when I guess the location in the last two it says that it's in the Fiji Islands: https://geoguessr.com/challenge/GscrhSoloX9JF0p7

    Maja
  • I've had a couple of games in which the location I guess clearly shows the name of a town but the result says the location is about 50km away! Perhaps the system is getting overloaded? Does anyone at Geogeussr actually look at this forum?
    Martin Rickerd
  • Hmm, I'd hope so, Martin. 50 km is a little way too ... but I mean, from Uruguay to the Fiji Islands, that's halway across the globe :-O GeoGuessr seems to be having quite a few bugs today ...
    Maja
  • The problem is still here - three games in a row the game the first location has just been a black screen, like this one, which apperently is Mauritius:
    https://www.geoguessr.com/challenge/n7V7rUPEzEh1JLJm

Other times it has been Fiji, and multiple times duplicate places have come up, and the second time the same place appeared, it was either Fiji og Mauritius.

Very weird, and it removes the fun of GeoGeuessr
    Christian
  • Black screen is getting more frequent, definitely wouldn't pay to play like this. Aren't the adds enough to keep geoguessr working ? Do you actually need to make a profit off of us?

    Cheers
    Matt
  • We have now pushed an update that should eliminate all black screens that are appearing due to faulty locations (locations that Google has removed from streetview).

Let me know if you guys can still reproduce this, and if you can, please provide a link to the game (or challenge) and I will take another look at our end.

    /Jesper
    Jesper
  • I can't seem to start a challenge anymore as a free user? Is your recent updates just trying to destroy your entire user base? I understand that you need money, but you already have ads, and just removing every way that a user can play for free with their friends won't make you more money.

You are digging your own grave with this...
    Christian
  • Completely agree. I used to love this game. I will not pay for it. Especially given that for the last couple of years the black screen of death was more often than not. I know they say they've fixed that, but I'm not going to pay to find out. The most pathetic part is that they know damn well that teachers have been using this to help teach geography. The ads were bad enough, but I get that they need to make money to keep things going. But this? I'm done.
    Nicole
  • Then don't pay and go back to your dream world where you get everything for free. Too bad people can't take few seconds to check the explanations all over and see that challenges are still playable free so only one pro account is needed.
    Mapper
  • Still getting black screens of death.  I would be glad to go pro but I won't while I can't play the game.  Still getting the black screens just about every third click of going forward.  The game I played today was United States.  Rte 200 in Montana, tons of black screens.  https://geoguessr.com/maps/usa
    Lil
  • Hi Jesper! It's Maja again.

We just tried playing this game: https://geoguessr.com/results/asIwBznRbOp4GL12

But we were hit by two different sets of duplicates in map 3 and 5 (and even though the duplicate maps showed Australia and Alaska, the "correct" answer was the Fiji Islands – also as usual). We quit the game. It feels like a waste of time instead of being a weekly break for the team :/

    Maja
  • Did you play a challenge on the free trial world map? It's not working, because challenge mode uses Google Streetview data instead of Mapillary, but the location pool is still the Mapillary one. Consequently, it tries to load Streetview in places where it doesn't exist, like in Fiji, and you get black screens.

    Use another map for challenges.
    Mapper
  • Hi Mapper

Thanks for responding. Yes, we've been playing the free world map for a year now and this problem has never occured before – maybe because Mapillary all of sudden has some Fiji data that it didn't use to? But you see, the problem I described in my comment a few minutes ago, is that we're shown a location in Alaska/Australia/wherever but are being told it's in Fiji. It's not even a black screen that's the issue here.

But anyhow: Are you saying the solution is ... that we start paying for Geoguessr? Cause we're just a small team of three members spending 10 minutes every Monday on this Geoguessr break – I guess we'll just have to find something else for our weekly break instead.
    Maja
  • Maja
  • Don't make challenges from the free trial world map, it tries to select Google Streetview data when the map location pool is based on Mapillary data. That's a bug.
    Mapper
  • Got it, Mapper. But then what do you suggest we do? Just quit using GeoGuessr because they don't fix the bug anyhow? Or is there another map we can use – without paying for it?

    Maja
  • You can play for free:
    - you have one free game per day on any map you want
    - you can find challenge links and play them for free
    - you can join leagues to get regular free games

To find challenges, either you find a pro user that can make some or you just look at the activities on each map page where you will usually find challenge links (some have timer, some don't, no way to know before starting it).

To find leagues, you have to know someone that make some or find on internet community or people sharing leagues.

But you have to realize that free things are not a real thing, you always pay when browsing internet (ads, data collection etc). People think they can get free things but it's almost never true. In Geoguessr's case, the money is for Google as Geoguessr must pay Google expensive fees to use Google's data. That's why the free trial map doesn't use anything from Google.

I can understand subscription is not something that fits everyone's needs, especially for players that just want to play a few games every month, in this case the devs have to offer another approach like "buy X games for Y dollars as a one time payment". But that may take time to come (if they even decide to do this) as Geoguessr is just a hobby for the devs, they have an actual work to live on top of this.
    Mapper
  • Same bug AGAIN today. Happens virtually every game.

    Helene
  • Yes its a frequent problem (I have a pro account) that seems to appear after having played a couple of rounds. Very frustrating. If you could check your logs if you can see any errors in there that would be great thanks.
    Hoover
  • Also getting this issue now when creating my first own map. I noticed the following things: it works flawless the first few minutes. After looking at locations in a fast paced manner, i start to get only black screens. From that point on, all locations I visit for the first time (are not cached) are black. Locations I saw before are usually not black, but might be a bit blurry (I guess I'm seeing the cached image there only).

In the developer console I saw this message: Cross-Origin Request Blocked: "The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https://lh3.ggpht.com/p/AF1QipPW98kD7GyYx0Tl1__2Jg33EB3FhFqqQ0e0wgt2=x0-y0-z3. (Reason: CORS header ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ missing)."
So for testing purposes, I installed this addon for firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cors-everywhere/) and the CORS errors are gone. Though, the problem persists, so I guess that the black screen issue is not CORS related.

A lot more likely to be the problem is that in the Firefox Network Analysis I see that as soon as the black images occur, I'm getting 403 Forbidden responses for the images that are being loaded, see screenshot. In the response it says "Rate limit exceeded". Well, that is pretty clear. So probably Geoguessr isn't even the one to blame here alone. Although, what might be possible, if the rate limit can't be increased, is to at least display a message to the user that they have to come back in X minutes. That's also not nice, but certainly less frustrating than a black screen.

I might also see "This location is no longer available in Google Streetview." but I'm not sure if and how that is related.

I hope this help solving this issue. If you need more detailed information, let me know.

    Martin Weber
  • Ah yes very interesting Martin - I did not have the reflex to check the firefox console but what you write seems coherent with my observations: on some maps this happens very frequently (location no longer available ?) and on some others after some time playing (limit exceeded ?).
    Hoover
  • Had the black screen during a game. Again a 403 Forbidden / "rate limit exceeded" error.

    Found a workaround:
Try waiting for some minutes and refresh the page. That did the trick for me.
    Martin Weber
  • Looks like this issue has been going on since 2017 and still not resolved.

Black screen on ALL five rounds.
Pretty piss poor if you all me. Don't think I'll burger again.

  • Hi all - install the chrome extension "CORS Unblock" and the black screen issue should be resolved.
    li
  • @li: cannot confirm this works. CORS errors do not show up in the console screen is still black. Instead of the CORS error it show a 403 forbidden error on Chrome but nothing useful on Firefox.
    Alex
  • Alex
  • CORS Unblock extension does not work for me either. It never happens during the daily challenge but only when playing other offcial or user created maps. Maybe for the daily challenge gueguessr has a special agreement with google maps so that it works since maps has become very expensive.

  • Duckman
  • @Marika and @Duckman I can load the picture, but it's an user-submitted photosphere and not Google's pictures and they're very likely to not load. It is a known glitch with Google and afaik no fix exists so probably Google has to fix on their side. Usually trying a bit later works but it's really random.

@Rich in your case it's official Street View which I can load too. Is it still a black screen? Can you load Street View when visiting maps.google.com as well?
    Mapper
  • Does this one qualify as a non-StreetView image
    https://www.geoguessr.com/game/zWUZZR2r1zfPfQ4Y

if and when it works, I believe it to be Finland, but am atop a white van, and can only move a few stuttering alternately fuzzy or blacked out steps east or west.

    Glyn
  • Well, ain't that peculiar, the next morning it worked as normal. Still on top of the white van, and yes it was Finland. Is Google doing some outsourcing?
    Glyn
  • Yes Google had the very bad idea to let random people uploading their own pictures, which always results in bad quality. It's like they decided to kill their own services. So every time someone covers a road himself, it becomes unplayable for Geoguessr. Progressively our playground is reducing and we can't do anything...
    Mapper
  • Today's daily challenge gave me black screen on round 4. https://www.geoguessr.com/results/M67DX8l7a5WfnlGd
Afaik this is the road you start on (albeit not exact same position but it seems to have functional pictures in regular streetview) https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fv211,+Norge/@60.3547186,9.1681684,17712m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x464064b300a0993f:0xe320b4cbf86cd166!8m2!3d60.358679!4d9.1914067

    rund
  • This happens because this idiot covered the road with his own low-quality pictures, replacing Google's high quality coverage and makes it unplayable in GeoGuessr. Sadly it is not possible to do anything about that as it's a choice from Google.
    Mapper
  • I do believe GeoGuessr can do something about it.  The javascript error can be detected, and the location can be automatically flagged.
    Eric
  • Hey, I recently updated to Pro and I stubled upon the same issue - Black screeen.
It is really annoying as the game has a great concept and it is a real fun to play, but issues like this make it completely unplayable.

I played European stadiums map from unibwin and almost every 2nd round there is a black screen, so it makes it impossible to play. Nothing really helps, I have tried different browsers, refreshing the page, still the same black screen.

I hope you can come up with a sollution for this soon, so we are able to enjoy the full potential of the game.

    Ipv
  • I mean it shouldn't be that hard to overcome this issue:
1.) provide a way to report a location/panorama so that other people do not face the same issue
2.) check if the streetview image has been loaded, if not provide an alternative location

But as the last official response to this problem is10 months old, I don't think they are really interested in solving this problem or they are not capable of doing so.
    Alex
  • They already have a way to detect broken locations (locations removed on Google Maps). But the issue is that black screens are not broken locations, they actually exist on Google Maps. It's just that Google, for some unknown reason, won't let it load on an external website like GeoGuessr all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This is almost exclusively related to unofficial panoramas not made by Google but by regular users so it is probably Google throttling them to prioritize official panorama on bandwidth usage. This is pure speculation, I couldn't find an official explanation.

Many user-made maps uses those unofficial panoramas, especially for locations such as stadium, museums, indoor places or random "hard maps". If you want to avoid black screens you need to find maps that try to avoid those pictures. Official maps can have some of them as well (especially famous places map since not all those places are captured by Google).

Lately Google allowed random people to also create their own Street View, often replacing official pictures by their own which are bad quality and almost impossible to navigate. Those are literally unplayable on GeoGuessr for those reasons + the black screen issue since they are unofficial pictures and are subject to the same problem. And every month it's becoming worse as those people all around the world progressively cover the roads with their trash, making the game lose its playground without any way to fight back as Google doesn't listen its customers...

Some of us are trying to find solutions with the developers by checking what the Google API can do, we found some interesting ideas but this require a big change into how maps and locations are saved, which may break all existing maps. You understand they can't just do that without taking time to see how to do it correctly without breaking everything. And this won't even fix the problem of the black screen since it touches all unofficial pictures, it's just to avoid selecting them instead of regular roads covered by Google. If you want the black screen problem to be fixed for once, there are two way: remove the unofficial locations, which will kill many maps like the stadium ones, or push Google to fix this problem (but it's like talking to a wall, nothing will move).
    Mapper
  • Thank you for the detailed explanation Mapper.

I like to 2nd Idea of Alex that is to change to a new location, if there is a black screen. Detecting whether the screen is black might not be too easy.

In the case that a black screen can not be detected automatically, I propose the following solution: let the user claim that he can't see anything (in form of a button in each round). In that case, he will get a new location. Of course that allows new possibilities of cheating, but we can also just use google to cheat anyways. This could be a temporary solution until Google fixes their API.
    Martin Weber
  • Martin, that's cool, but it doesn't work for leagues. When I play league, it's random who gets black screen and who doesn't.

Allowing people to flag problem maps is definitely a way forward, and then when you play league at least it tries to exclude flagged maps.
    Eric
  • Hi all,

a brief update: We've been in contact with Google to figure this out and we believe that the issue is pretty much what Mapper wrote above.

We hit some kind of rate limit for unofficial street view images (maybe only at peak hours?) that the Google support we talked to didn't even know about.

Hopefully we'll figure something out together with them soon.

    best,
    Mikael
  • 50% black screens after playing maybe an hour.
Disappointing after upgrading & paying up front.
    Anthony
  • Hi Anthony,

Sorry for the inconvenience. Which map did you play? My suggestion while were trying to sort this issue is to play maps without lots of user uploaded locations (ex Famous places)

    best,
    Mikael
  • I've been playing famous places, actually.  It's reduced to maybe 1/20 or so.

    Thanks for the reply.
    Anthony
  • In addition to the black screen, which is occuring now on almost every game I play, I get the "Failed to Load the Panorama at this round" "Try Again" message, and basically that means it's frozen as every time I try again, I get the same message.

I seem to be in a black box with a twin row of LEDs, and loads of Google dates from 2015 to 2019. If this can't be fixed I'll just have to delete the whole game.
    Glyn Evans
  • This is a problem from Google. What you see is actually the camera protection which is put on the camera itself. The driver of the Street View car either forgot to remove the camera protection or kept it to not capture pictures of sensitive area (military base etc). Nothing can be done with that so you're pretty much done with this game. If you keep moving you may find your way out but getting 5000 points is probably not possible.

If this was your free game tell me which map it was and I'll send you a challenge link so you can play again without waiting tomorrow.
    Mapper

    Melanie
  • They're never going to fix this issue lol, don't give them money.
    JD
  • They can't fix it because it can be caused by so many reasons: hardware, connection, software, limitations (school blocking etc), Google Maps API failing, Google removing data etc. It's the kind of specific user-case issue that is the nightmare of all developers.
    Mapper
  • Please, the game should at least start. Just got a black screen for all 5 rounds of my first free game. If the above is true, that you cannot fix it, and it renders the game unplayable, why would anyone pay for pro?
    RC
  • Because they can play? Like I said it's user specific but most players can play fine.

In this kind of situation the best you can do is to provide information about your setup: OS, browser, connection, hardware used etc. Maybe they can figure out some pattern in the impacted users.
    Mapper
  • so, i got a pro account. played like 20 games in a row without any problems. now i only get blackscreens. haven't changed anything on my laptop. the problem came out of nowhere...

    Christian
  • That's the joy of web dev using external source of data. You can be the most professional ever, things will never work for every users. Most people can play fine but a few ones will have issues from whatever reason it can be.

It looks like many users affected by the problem use Apple products. I guess Google and Apple don't go along well.

  • Just signed up for Pro after watching lots of others play on YouTube... big fan of the game before I even started. But I have got this black screen of death in my very first game as Pro, after several lockups that forced me back to the start Disappointed to find this is obviously a long standing issue. I’m on Safari on an iPadPro. Recent comments here suggest I should expect the worst.
    Jeremy

    Jayden
  • Exact same thing happened to me, bought pro, now all I have is black screens.
    evan
  • After two days, black screens stopped appearing. I can now use the game fully and hopefully they won't come back.

  • slow, laggy game, that eventually turns into a black screen. I do not have pro, and this is ruining my game experiences as I cannot exit the game and reload it without forfeiting for 24 hours until I can play for free again.

  • Your computer is probably too slow for it. It may just be Google Street View with a bit of extras on top, it's still a bit heavy for older or smaller computers.

Note: you can resume games with https://www.geoguessr.com/me/current even if you already used the free game.

  • Frequent black screens on iPads... with pro... annoying!
    Mo
  • They can't do anything about everything Apple related. Google and Apple don't work well together especially since Apple has its own Maps app.

You have an iOS version of the game but it's not that complete (and doesn't require pro to play).

  • Hi,

If you would be able to record when you get this error that would be greatly appreciated so we can look further into this.

    Guide:
    https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/har_analyzer/

    To capture:
    1. Open the game and start the recording (see HAR capture instructions)
    2. Reproduce the issue
    3. Stop the recording (see HAR capture instructions)
    4. Save the capture (see HAR capture instructions)

Send us the HAR-capture to subscription@geoguessr.com and we can have a further look.

    Thanks in advance!

  • That is an extreme amount of bug reporting that you put on your shoulders of your customers, Filip. I am a pro user, and I just got yet another black screen. This is simply not acceptable, and the fact that you haven't replied to this thread in more than 6 months shows that you do not care about your customers.
    Chrras
  • And instead of writing this useless complain, did you actually try to follow the steps he wrote so you can help them find why this problem happens?
    Mapper
  • I reported the location as a "black screen". I am not going to use a HAR capture every single time I encounter a black screen, when the Geoguessr team haven't been able to fix this issue for the past three years, why would a HAR capture help them?
    Chrras
  • Yo guys, as annoying as it is it's notthing but a small bug that happenes to small amount of users. The price is like 1 to 2 dollars a month what do you expect a perfect customer service with compliments and a blow job maybe? Get down to earth pls!
    Dobroslav Georgiev
  • If they didn't fix the issue yet it is because this only affects a very small part of the userbase. You may not know (and that's perfectly normal if you're not working in this domain) but web dev can be quite frustrating as problems can arise just because a specific user uses a specific version of a specific browser on a specific operating system on a specific device. With so many possible combinations it is impossible to create a web service such as GeoGuessr that works perfectly for all users.

This is why they need data. If they think a HAR capture can help them then the best to do it to try getting it to send them the data. Reporting the location as a black screen is already a good help as it can just be a location that was removed by Google at some point but sadly that's not the only reason black screens can appear in the game.
    Mapper

  • A Link to the Past should not be #1, in my opinion. The concept of the Zelda games is not suitable for everyone. I had to use walkthroughs for Ocarina of Time, and now I'm wondering why it's suddenly regarded as one of the greatest games ever, especially with all the hullabaloo about the Water Temple. Super Mario World on the other hand, has a easy to use/understand concept of just making it to the end of a level, with no frustrating no-hints given puzzles that you can learn from and not get frustrated with from getting lost, and again, was a pack-in game. Arguably the best of all games packaged with systems.<a  href="https://thefucksites.com/">Paul Brown</a>
